Pouch made from repurposed cacao jute bags by artisan woman in Haiti. Each pouch measures approximately 7.5x6", has a zipper closing and wristlet.
The Atelye Thevenet women's artisan cooperative, based in Jean Rabel, Haiti, produces unique, handcrafted items in the poorest region of the Western Hemisphere. As a Fair Trade collaboration it represents an alternative approach to trade that is rooted in a commitment to uphold the dignity of every person. Fair Trade projects such as these support ecologically and economically sustainable development, pay living wages, and build mutually respectful, long-term trading relationships between consumers and disadvantaged producers from around the world.
Each bag is arduously handmade by the women artisans in Jean Rabel and purchased directly by us. This latest batch was brought in the suitcase of a Haitian priest that flew to Miami, which tells you how grassroots this project is. Each pouch varies in design as the women do their best to create designs using scarce resources. Some are plain jute color and others contain cacao logos. Our intention is to sell these to support their work and help provide some form of financial support. We mark up very little from their costs to produce in a country with extremely high inflation as Haiti to help cover shipping expenses. Therefore, we do our best for most of the money to go back to the co-op.
